Along with works by Sánchez (“Imagen de la Virgen”, 1648), Lasso de la Vega (“Huei tlamahuiçoltica”, 1649) and Francisco de la Florencia (“Estrella del norte”, 1688), this is one of four texts considered foundational in spreading the devotion to the Virgen of Guadalupe beyond local oral tradition. Along with those other texts, it helped to push the Catholic Church to investigate the Virgin’s appearances and ultimately grant official approval of the Guadalupe cult. Like the other three 17th century publications, Becerra’s work leans heavily on a Nahuatl-language account of the Virgin’s apparition, “Nican Mopohua”, thought to have been written by Antonio Valeriano around 1556.</dc:description><dc:description>Originally part of the Genaro García Collection.</dc:description><dc:identifier>utblac:18477624-5b6b-47d4-ac11-c51ecb47b475</dc:identifier><dc:language>Spanish</dc:language><dc:publisher>Por la Viuda de Bernardo Calderon</dc:publisher><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/CNE/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:relation>Benson Rare Book Collection</dc:relation><dc:format>[10] pages, [1]-25 leaves; 20 centimeters</dc:format><dc:subject>Catholic Church</dc:subject><dc:subject>Shrines</dc:subject><dc:subject>Guadalupe, Our Lady of</dc:subject><dc:title>Origen milagroso del santvario de nuestra Señora de Gvadalvpe: extramuros de la Ciudad de Mexico: fvndamentos veridicos con que se prueba ser infalible la tradicion, que ay en esta Ciudad, à cerca de la aparicion de la Virgen Maria Señora Nuestra, y de su milagrosa imagen.</dc:title><dc:type>rare books</dc:type><dc:type>text</dc:type><dc:type>religious materials</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
