Because of the presence of arms aboard the ship, the Japanese interpreted it as an invasion force, or at least an advance party, and after a brief imprisonment, on February 5, 1597, crucified Philip and 25 others, including other friars and Japanese tertiaries, who became known as the "Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan." The first edition was published in Mexico in 1683, and is even scarcer than this one.</dc:description><dc:description>Originally part of the Genaro García Collection.</dc:description><dc:identifier>utblac:a0926ad8-7724-4c06-ac87-30c609418769</dc:identifier><dc:language>Spanish</dc:language><dc:publisher>En la imprenta de los herederos de la viuda de Juan Garcia Infanzon</dc:publisher><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NKC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:relation>Benson Rare Book Collection</dc:relation><dc:format>14 preliminary leaves, 176 pages, plates : 1 illustration ; 21 centimeters</dc:format><dc:subject>Martyrs</dc:subject><dc:title>Vida, martyrio, y beatificacion del invicto proto-martyr del Japon, San Felipe de Jesvs, patron de Mexico su patria, imperial corte de Nueva España en el Nuevo Mundo</dc:title><dc:type>rare books</dc:type><dc:type>text</dc:type><dc:type>hagiographies</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
