Program summary: Alma Diaz interviews students and campus organizations, Coalition of Minority Organization and Chicano Culture Committee, to discuss the racial issues on campus. Students provide stories of struggles encountered with faculty and admin, while campus organizations discuss the lack of power and recognization they receive. Evert discusses the work of the Coalition of Minority Organization (COMO), for which he is a spokesman, which brings minority organizations and faculty to discuss the problems at UT Austin. Evert spoke about a press conference COMO led, in which they expressed issues in retention and admissions of minority students due to UT Austin being under investigation because of the admission and recruitment procedures. The event garnered attention from the media and the University president, Peter Tyrrell Flawn. Evert acknowledges that the organization does not have a position of power. COMO creates an environment in which students and faculty can come together and hope to have some influence on the decision University admins are making. Segundo leads the Chicano Culture Committee (CCC) and explains the issues that committees like CCC face. The committee is a broad group, and many students prefer joining groups with a focus. It is hard for CCC to reach out to students due to Daily Texans ignoring minority issues on campus. The committee has limited access to admin, and they do not understand Chicano needs. CCC does not have a structure set like other white organizations meaning it is time intensive for Chicano students to participate. .
