Description:
This is the second version of a biographical work of Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús that includes a historical account of his evangelical work in America and his miracles, written by Fray Hermenegildo de Vilaplana. Originally published in 1763, in the printing house of the Mexican Library. The second version of Fray Hermenegildo Vilaplana's La Vida Portentosa appears in Madrid printed by Juan de San Martín in 1775. In this version, the work includes an engraving of the portrait of Fray Margil made by the talented Lorenzo Sánchez de Mansilla, depicting his evangelization of different ethnic groups, including one man who has docilely left the bow and the arrow on the ground, as a symbol of resistance to the message of Fray Antonio. In the same way, a woman with a child in her arms and another pair of men of different ethnic groups appear under a tropical palm, listening solicitously to the friar with the bare and winged feet. The poster reads: "V. R. Del V. P. F. Antonio Margil de Jesus aclamado de la pieda, pr nuevo Apostol de la nueva España, fundador, Prefecto, y Exguardián de los colegios de Queretaro, Guatemala, y Zacatecas. Fué natural de la Ciudad de Valencia, y murió en México á 6 de Agosto de 1726." | Originally part of the Genaro García Collection.
