A 1571 history and description of Franciscan evangelization in Hispanola and New Spain in five books. Contains a table of contents (beginning page 323 [677]) and an index (beginning page 329 [689]). The first book principally concerns events on Hispanola and settlements on the South American mainland including Cumaná. The second book concerns descriptions of the customs and beliefs of Nahuatl-speaking peoples of present-day Mexico. Book three concerns the arrival of Hernán Cortés and the conquest of Tenochtitlán, the administration of New Spain, and efforts to christianize the Indigenous people of New Spain. Book four describes the creation of new provinces within New Spain and the expansion of Franciscans to those regions, efforts at conversion to Christianity and harm done to the Indigenous populations. Book five concerns the life of fraile Martín de Valencia and other notable Franciscans. Bookplates for J.M. Andrade and Joaquín García Icazbalceta are visible in the inside cover. Illustrations can be found on pages 15, 91, 179, 323, 499, 639. This text was later published in Mexico by Joaquín García Icazbalceta in 1870.
