Photograph of classroom interior. There are seven children and two adults. Five of the children are seated around a table and there is a cake in the center of the table. One child is standing up and the other one is to the side (sitting in what appears to be a street toy car). A note on the blackboard says, "Today is Angel’s birthday. He is seven years old today." Other sentences on the blackboard indicate that Angels mother baked a birthday cake and put seven candles on the cake. Staged classroom scene connects to a lesson plan developed to teach English to Spanish speaking children in San Antonio, Texas. Additional information about this photograph can be found in the book titled The Education of Mexican and Spanish-speaking Children in Texas by Herschel T. Manuel. Photograph caption from the book: "Figure 23 – Dramatization of Lesson in San Antonio. Miss Willet and Miss Storm are in the picture." From page 140-141 of the book: “The class is a section of a high-first grade in the John B. Hood School (No. 33) of San Antonio. Mr. J.A. Starnes is the principal and Miss Clara Willet the teacher. The general setting is shown in Figure 23, which is a reproduction of a photograph taken just before the lesson.
