Letter on the recent attacks of the missions in San Diego
Other Title:
Carta al presidente de las misiones Californias, Fray Junípero Serra
Description:
Letter to an unknown recipient in which Fray Junípero Serra relays news given to him by Commander Don Fernando de Rivera y Moncada and Lieutenant Coronel Don Juan Bautista de Anza on the recent Indigenous attacks of the missions in San Diego and their current state. He acknowledges the death of Fray Luis Jayme and expresses relief that families destined to Monterey made it without encountering the violence. Expressing distrust of the catechized Indigenous people, he notes that he asked Governor Don Felipe Neve to recruit more soldiers to provide protection to the missions and friars, urging support for this strategy throughout the rest of the letter. He also notes that the arrival of boats in San Francisco might help with the settlement and pacification of the region.
