Manuel Filomeno Rodríguez’s novel narrates the gruesome 1789 murders of Mexico City merchant Joaquín Dongo and 10 of his employees during a robbery. Notably, the perpetrators of the crime were Spanish while the victims were Mexican-born. In spite of this fact, authorities acted quickly, executing the three murderers a mere 15 days after the crime. Part 2 of 2.
