Description:
Don Juan Cavallero y Ocio, a local philanthropist, permitted the colonial city of Querétaro to build a church devoted to the cult of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This imposing structure was officially dedicated in 1680 with an elaborate program of ceremonies both religious and lay in character. An important participant in these festivities was the celebrated savant, Don Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, who was commissioned to prepare a detailed account of the occasion and its antecedents. The result was a thin volume entitled “Glorias de Querétaro” written in the fashion of the time and typical of many publications produced by colonial presses. It contains nearly photographic description of certain incidents, such as the “mascara” or parade accompanied by floats and figures representing Aztecs deities and monarchs, and a certamen, or poetic contest. This volume also contains Sigüenza’s “Primavera Indiana”, written circa 1662 and considered the first long-form poem about the Virgin of Guadalupe. This 1680 printing has two stanzas not included in the poem’s original 1668 publication, in addition to scores of other revisions. | Originally part of the Genaro García Collection.
