"A esta hora conversamos", a radio program produced by the Longhorn Radio Network, includes interviews, music, and informational programs related to the Mexican American community and their concerns. Program summary: Alma Diaz and Martha Cotera, Director of Information Systems Development and member of various local and national Chicana organizations, about the role of Chicanas in barrio organizations. Cotera begins by discussing Chicana's roles in community organizations in Austin, Texas. Not only have Chicanas been working alongside women's groups, they have been creating groups of their own. Cotera talks about how before these organizations were formed, Chicanas worked with a large variety of community organizations in different focus areas to address the multi-facetted problems Chicanas face. Cotera also discusses the impact of sexism on the relationship between Chicana advocacy groups and established politicians. This leads to a discussion on the barriers that Chicanas face in becoming involved in advocacy organizations. Cotera next discusses minority women's access to the vote and the impact of the Voting Rights Act of 1974. Cotera talks about how women were supposedly given the right to vote in 1920, however, due to pervasive racism, minority women were denied their right to vote until the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1974. This leads to discussion of the upcoming vote to re-establish the Voting Rights Act. Lastly, Cotera discusses the Mexican-American Business Women's Association or MABPWA. Cotera discusses the need for MABPWA as the need for women led and run organizations has grown. Cotera also discusses MABPWA accomplishments in the community and their involvement in politics. MABPWA's accomplishments are frequently tied in with other organization's as MABPWA rarely works in isolation. Cotera also speaks to what MABPWA has accomplished for women personally. As Cotera puts it, MABPWA has helped to create strong bonds of friendship and sisterhood among the organization. MABPWA also shares a common bond with other Chicano organizations as they all share a obligation to the community to help as they have been helped. Broadcast date: 1981-10-23.
