American backed newspaper published weekly in Granada, Nicaragua during a period of increased American interests in Nicaragua and the beginnings of the Filibuster War of 1855-1860. It is published in both English and Spanish. This particular issue contains a story titled "The Dutchman who had the Smallpox", news from the United States including some stories in jest, an update related to Costa Rican political affairs and the reputation of President Juan Mora, and coverage of the funeral of Captain James Walker, the younger brother of General William Walker. Also included is a list of mail remaining at the post office in Granada, an article on the power of the press, news from Europe and Japan, and a reflection on the fate of the filibuster. The Spanish language portion of the issue includes reprintings of decrees and government correspondence from president Patricio Rivas and other officials, an article of the presidency of Juan Mora, an article on education, poetry column, and an article addressed to other Central American governments. | Vol. 1, No. 28
